Drum4Fun, Young People and Musical Activities

Based on a recently completed study at Keele University, there is clear evidence that young people’s sense of identification with music participation begins to decline as they move on to the senior school system. This goes hand in hand with a general lack of identification with the school environment.

This decline is halted, or even reversed, for those young people who take part in music activities. (The effects of Participating in Musical Activities Dr Alexandra Lamount 2001)
However, many young people feel excluded from music participation due to financial factors, and that music-making is associated with expensive instruments and tuition; or because they do not have a tradition of amateur music-making in their family and community.

How do we motivate young people?
African drumming is cool. The drums are not associated with grandparents or parents. The drums are big, bold and noisy. They give young people a voice that they associate with dance and trance rhythms.

How can we motivate young people to participate in musical activities and encourage them to feel better about themselves and improve their self- esteem?
Over 60% of young people describe themselves as non musicians, and when asked why, it was because they had been “turned off by music studies” because they were not “fun” and “too much like hard work”. Drumming is not hard work and it takes very little input to achieve extremely satisfying results, in a relatively short space of time.
